Apple announced its “Apple Intelligence”, a new generative AI system, at WWDC 2024. The system will be incorporated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, marking a significant shift towards AI in Apple’s ecosystem.
At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, Apple unveiled its latest innovation, “Apple Intelligence,” a generative AI system that will revolutionize the user experience across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
The Apple Intelligence platform offers practical tools that most users regularly utilize. These tools encompass new writing capabilities for editing, checking for errors, and condensing emails and messages. Additionally, users can access original emoji and image generation features, among others. A standout feature is Genmoji, which enables users to generate distinctive emojis through written descriptions.
Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, has been enhanced with AI capabilities. Users can now request Siri provide articles and web page summaries in Safari. Additionally, Siri can extract personal details from an ID photo to autofill online forms. Apple has strongly emphasized the significance of "personal context" with Apple Intelligence, allowing for natural language searches of photos containing specific family members or friends.
Most of Apple Intelligence's operations will be conducted on users' devices as part of an effort to prioritize privacy. Any tasks that cannot be performed locally will be sent to Apple's data processing centers. Additionally, Apple has unveiled Private Cloud Compute, a functionality that leverages the cloud for advanced AI processing while maintaining data security.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is integrated into Apple Intelligence, enabling users to seek assistance from ChatGPT for various queries. Examples include recipe suggestions using particular ingredients or seeking interior design tips by sharing a photo of a space that requires improvement.
The upcoming iOS 18 update for iPhone is scheduled for release in the autumn. It will introduce support for Rich Communication Service (RCS), a new Passwords app, an updated Calculator app, and additional features to provide users with enhanced control over their home screens.
The Photos app has also received a substantial redesign. iPadOS 18 will introduce a new Tab Bar and Smart Script feature in the Notes app. Additionally, the Calculator app will become available on iPads with the update.
The next version of Apple's computer software, macOS Sequoia, will incorporate features such as iPhone mirroring, a new Passwords app, and other updates, including a tool for snap window arrangement, Presenter Preview, and gaming enhancements.
These updates will bring some of the most significant changes to Apple devices in years. They emphasize the importance of AI, privacy, and user experience. The comprehensive incorporation of AI through the new "Apple Intelligence" system is particularly interesting. Apple is making a substantial effort to integrate AI as a critical component of its overall ecosystem.
