Chipotle's CEO announces plans to retrain staff for more generous portion sizes following public scrutiny and viral social media trends.
As many know, Chipotle recently has been scrutinized by the public for their change of portion sizes. CEO, Brian Niccol has confirmed that there will be changes in the portion sizes and “generous” portions are on the way. The CEO announced that he plans to retrain operators to limit the skimping of portion sizes. He stated that skimping on portions was never intended by Chipotle and that he will be focusing on training and coaching employees.
A viral trend was created on social media, with the public bringing cameras and pretending to film workers as they create their chipotle bowl/burrito. Thinking the cameras would make the employees fill the bowls/burritos more with their product, the viral trend took a life of its own, making the CEO comment on this. Many are still skeptical stating, “Someone save their empty bowls and let’s compare the specs in a month or so.”
In June, a Wells Fargo analyst weighed 75 bowls at Chipotle with the same order and found a wide variety of portion sizes. This data showed that some locations are more generous with portions than others. CEO Niccol plans to “relook at our execution across our entire system” stated during an earnings call, as they saw an increase of 18.2% in revenue from their second quarter in 2023.
