The DOJ has alleged that TikTok is gathering American users' sensitive data and views on controversial topic points such as religion, gun control, abortion, and voting sentiment. The DOJ is claiming that a tool utilized to transfer the data called “Lark” allows the transfer of user data collected by TikTok to be sent to Chinese servers. This heightens the national security threat that is spreading in the United States by TikTok. With TikTok being scrutinized by the DOJ, more and more news coming out on the malicious use of users data in the US come to light.

In the previous year TikTok was reported by The Wall Street Journal to be collecting and tracking users' data on those who viewed LGBTQ content. TikTok used an internal dashboard to track this data but the company claimed that this was deleted later. With 170 million users, TikTok faces a potential ban in December if it does not comply with being sold by its current owners.
